The world’s first green methanol-powered container ship will set sail in the fall of 2023. The dual-fuel engine vessel has a capacity of 2’100 TEU (twenty-foot-equivalent units).
A.P. Moller – Maersk ordered a total of 19 green methanol vessels. Moreover, the company signed 9 partnership in 2022 with the aim of accelerating the development and scaling of green methanol. These key steps, along with numerous efficiency improvements and other sustainability investments, have helped the company approach its goal of transporting 25% of the company’s ocean cargo with green fuels by 2030. However, there is still more work to be done, as some sustainability goals will not be reached soon.
Green methanol is created using renewable energy and biomass, such as agricultural and forest residue, with very low or zero CO2 emissions. Other than green methanol, the company is also relying on biodiesel to lower its emissions, as well as green ammonia potentially in the future.
