SunMed Acquires Vyaire Consumables Business

SunMed acquires Vyaire Consumables Business

On March 28, 2023, SunMed announced the acquisition of the consumables business from Vyaire, further strengthening its position as a leading medical consumables manufacturer.

SunMed’s extensive respiratory care portfolio, including breathing circuits, patient interfaces, cannulas and other respiratory care products, will be further expanded with Vyaire’s respiratory and anesthesia consumables.

There are numerous benefits to this acquisition:

  • The addition of Vyaire’s North American manufacturing facility will ensure higher supply chain resiliency and faster product delivery for SunMed.
  • The acquisition will also boost the company’s engineering and manufacturing capabilities. With the acquisition, SunMed will have over 150 engineers on board and additional 250’000 square feet of manufacturing space.
  • Overall, SunMed will strengthen its position in respiratory consumables, while Vyaire will focus more on its specialty in respiratory diagnostics and ventilation.

The value of the acquisition was not made public. Assuming that there are no regulatory issues, as the agreement is subject to antitrust regulatory clearance in the US, the acquisiton is expected to be finalized by mid-2023.

The medical consumables market is highly fragmented – more M&A activity can be expected in the near future. Companies must choose where they plan to stand on the spectrum between full portfolio providers, such as Intersurgical and Teleflex, and focused niche players, such as Plastiflex and Ambu.

What is your company’s strategy? Are you a full portfolio provider or a focused niche player?
