Although the climate crisis is the greatest challenge of the 21st century, many solutions that we need to reach sustainability already exist. Whether it be technologies, processes or businesses models, these solutions can help lower a company’s environmental impact, without sacrificing profitability or market competitiveness.
In this Insight, we presented some of these sustainability solutions, as well as their example role models. These companies are emerging as sustainability leaders in their industries, due to their pioneering stance on sustainability and their strong commitments to a greener future.
- Becton Dickinson (BD) has greatly reduced its energy consumption, as part of the company’s goal to lower energy consumption by 25% by 2030 (from 2019 levels). As a result, 13 company sites today operate solely on renewable energy sources.
- Kuehne + Nagel is a champion of sustainability and a great role model, in the logistics industry and beyond. The company recycles >80% of its waste globally and over 70% of their energy comes from renewable sources. - LEGO has named waste a key focus area for the company’s sustainability journey. As part of this commitment, the company is introducing plant-based plastic bricks. Moreover, the company is phasing out plastic packaging, as well as expanding its circular economy initiatives. The company is also investing in renewable energy and energy efficiency, among other areas.
- Holcim, one of the largest players in a highly carbon-intensive industry, is making steady progress towards sustainability. Their goal is to produce cement from 100% recycled construction waste – they currently offer 20% recycled cement.
