During ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), blood is pumped out of patient’s body to a machine, which removes CO2 and sends oxygen-rich blood back to tissues in the body.
An oxygenator is essentially an artificial lung that enriches blood with oxygen, before it is pumped back into the patient’s body. This process is supported by an ECMO machine.
