Kuehne+Nagel is a leader in sustainability. The logistics company is making steady progress towards more sustainable business, thanks to initiatives in waste, fuel, energy and more.
The largest sea- and airfreight forwarder in the world is taking impactful steps towards reaching its goal of reducing carbon emissions by 30% by 2030, from a 2019 baseline. This goal was announced in 2019 and confirmed by the Science Based Targets Initiative.
- Waste is one of the company’s key focus areas. Waste generated dropped from 496’000 tons in 2019 to 88’000 tons in 2022. And of the waste generated in 2022, 58% was recycled and 17% was recovered.
- By applying sustainable packaging principles, the company optimized 152 packaging processes, eliminating 586 tons of plastic packaging waste annually.
- Water consumption dropped by 30%, from 965 megaliters in 2019 to 678 megaliters in 2022.
- 99% of the electricity used in all company locations comes from renewable sources. Moreover, the company’s LED lighting footprint of 76% further lowers electricity consumption.
- Fuel remains a challenge for the company and the entire logistics sector. It creates significant CO2 emissions, but low carbon alternatives are still being developed. Kuehne Nagel is slowly introducing innovative alternatives, such as hydrotreated vegetable oil, solar panels on trucks and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
Thanks to collaboration with suppliers, cooperation with non-profit organizations and numerous company-wide initiatives, Kuehne+Nagel is successfully creating a more sustainable, yet profitable, business.
