ICU cost per bed is a major concern in modern healthcare. In Switzerland, the daily cost per bed goes up to 3’000 CHF. COVID-19 has driven costs further up.

To operate an intensive care bed (ICU) in Switzerland 24/7, 365 days a year requires more than six full-time equivalents (FTE). The number of personnel per bed is even higher, as caregivers often work part-time.

Figures are averages and will vary depending on intensity of care required. Besides the high personnel costs (incl. administration, etc.), the depreciation for the expensive equipment (ventilator, ECMO device, infusion pumps, etc.) is significant.
